Leave from port for a tour of Izmir, Turkey’s third largest city, with a population of nearly 4 million. An orientation tour along the streets of Izmir will show you that the city is today, and has been throughout centuries, a major port and commercial center, especially for the export of agricultural products, including the rich flavored tobacco, grapes and figs. During the orientation tour your guide will point out the Konak Clock Tower, Konak Mosque, Ataturk Monument, Passport Pier and Alsancak Train Station. Your first stop will be at the ancient Agora. At the excavations carried out in the quarter of Namazgah in Izmir, a wonderful agora from the Roman age has been discovered. The agora known as the public market in the antique periods had been destroyed completely in the earthquake in 178 AD and was reconstructed by orders of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The underground galleries, basilica, aqueducts are still standing splendidly and the water penetrating through stonewalls flows since the antique ages. Next, you will visit the Archaeology Museum of Izmir which is one of the most important museums of the Aegean region displaying many finds from Ionian, Aiol, Greek, Roman and Byzantine eras. At the end of your visit, you will return to the pier in order to rejoin the ship.
